Mangalsutra

Mangalsutra meaning the'sacred thread' is an Indian symbol of Hindu marriage. Mangalsutra is basically a long black beads chain necklace with a gold pendant or locket. Also known as "Thaali" or "Mangalyam", the tradition of wearing the Mangalsutra is the most important part of a Hindu marriage ritual ceremony. According to Hindu culture, there are five signs of marital status of women- mangalsutra, kumkum, bangles, toe rings and nose ring. Indian Mangalsutra necklace is the most important among them.

Indian Mangalsutra necklace is comparable to a Western wedding ring, and is worn by a married woman till the time the husband is alive. The reason for wearing Mangalsutra jewellery is that black beads are considered a talisman to ward off the evil eye. The significance of Mangalsutra is that it is a symbol of mutual love and goodwill, understanding and faithful commitment to one another in marriage.
